Red hair is a relatively rare and fantastic trait, MC1R is one of the key proteins that creates this fiery manifestation and less than 2% of the global population can call it theirs by nature. Have redhair and good chance you will be considered Irish at some stage!
Now more than ever being ginger is something sought after, a beauty that if lucky enough you have. Many turn to their stylists for this colour and some even use cosmetics to get ‘fake freckles!’
I want to take portraits of as many gingers as possible, young to old, small to big and as many tones of ginger as possible with the potential idea of exhibiting these portraits!
The series began at the First Ginger Pride event held in Belfast at Aether and Echo in February this year, it went so well that now I want to extend this series even further! Many writers, poets and artists have been inspired by red hair; as a ginger myself I will use my passion as a photographer to document in my own style.
I look to challenge the stereotype of ginger hair and to encourage and empower everyone to be proud of their uniqueness. I want the series to comment on societal standards people are judged by everyday. It will be a series I hope to continue on when I get a chance.
